Petty Magic

On this page, you’ll find works of magic and alchemy that have spread throughout the Archipelago. You can find these commonplace wonders in most cities, and they’re simple enough to produce that they’re generally available for purchase if you have a bit of coin to part with.

Charms

Cinder Pot. A little clay pot of smouldering embers which never grows cool. Used to warm the hands, provide a little light, or quickly start a fire. (5 coins)

Homeward Needle. Enchanted by a wizard with a spell of finding, it will always point the way to the island where it was made. (30 coins)

Kin Candle. Made by a wizard for a specific person with a drop of their blood. Burns with a bright blue flame if they’re alive and well, or a regular flame if they’re dead. The flame pulls in their general direction. (15 coins)

Paper Sprite. An expensive way to send a letter. The wind spirit bound up in this slip of paper will seek out and deliver itself to the message’s recipient, wherever they may be. It’s not foolproof, and sprites sometimes get lost along the way, but it’s much faster than waiting for a courier. (10 coins)

Potions

Bottled Wildfire. Highly volatile, thick as molasses, and burns with a searing blue flame that even water struggles to douse. (10 coins)

Frozen Mist. When the bottle is opened, thick fog pours out and fills the immediate area. Perfect for concealment. (7 coins)

Healing Draught. When you drink this potion, you immediately heal 1d6 Stamina. Drinking more than 1 draught in a short period will make you feel nauseous for a few hours. (3 coins)

Philtre of Awakening. For the next 10 minutes, your senses and perceptions are sharpened and magnified. You notice things others wouldn’t, and it’s very difficult to sneak up on you. It’s absolutely impossible to sleep for at least three hours after drinking one of these potions. (6 coins)

Philtre of Prescience. Opens your eyes to the invisible otherworld. You can use the Second Sight skill without rolling for the next 10 minutes. (6 coins)

Sleeping Draught. Induces a powerful drowsiness, ensuring a good night’s sleep. Drink before resting to heal the maximum amount of Stamina (i.e. 6 instead of 1d6), but drugged sleep makes you vulnerable. (2 coins)

Petty Alchemy

Feather Wrap. Wrap something in a sheet of this soft, fluffy material and it seems to weigh barely anything. Reduces the encumbrance of an item by 1 slot, but it can’t be unwrapped quickly. (8 coins)

Sparkblossom Matches. A little sprig of wood with a crystallised bead of sparkblossom resin on the end. Sold in packs of 20, these matches can be used to produce flame in an instant. (3 coins)
